British Values

In July 2014 we invited Shoo Rainer ( a children's book illustrator) to our school to help us thing about the things/values that are important to us. He helped us to think of designs for our second emblem. The children then had a go at drawing! Here is the chosen emblem by Amelia Hudson showing two happy children working, learning and playing well together.

The special relationship that the school has with the outdoors is illustrated by the chicken, flowers and butterfly. The church is behind the children showing that the Christian faith is an important part of the life of FitzHerbert CE VA Primary School and the local community.

British Values

The DfE have recently reinforced the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”

Our motto 'Learning as a Family, Growing as a School' is at the heart of the way we work.

The government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy, and these values have been reiterated by the Prime Minister this year. At FitzHerbert these values are reinforced regularly and in the following ways:

Democracy:

Pupils have the opportunity to have their voices heard through our School and Class Councils.The school regular canvasses pupils opinions on a range of school policies and issues. For instance science is now taught through Science Weeks and so we have asked the pupils their opinions on the changes.

The Rule of Law:

The importance of Laws/ rules, whether they be those that govern the class, the school, or the country, are consistently reinforced throughout regular school days, as well as when dealing with behaviour and through school assemblies. Pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken. Visits from authorities such as the Police; Fire Service; Lifeguards  are regular parts of our calendar and help reinforce this message. Our behaviour policy includes the 5Rs- rules, respect, responsibility, routines, and rights. 

Individual Liberty:

Within school, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school we educate and provide boundaries for young pupils to make choices safely, through the provision of a safe environment and empowering education. Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and advise how to exercise these safely, for example through our E-Safety and PSHE lessons. Pupils are given lots of opportunities to leaner about themselves through the voices provided in extracurricular clubs.

Mutual Respect:

Part of our school ethos and behaviour policy has revolved around Core Values such as ‘Respect’ as part of the whole school FitzHerbert Values.

Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs:

This is achieved through enhancing pupils understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society and by giving them opportunities to experience such diversity. The school has just been reaccredited with the International School Award and part of this work has included learning about other faiths in this country and others in a number of ways.
